Harbhajan Singh Khalsa, known as Yogi Bhajan, honoured in 1974 with the title of Siri Singh Sahib by the Sikh authorities in Amritsar, India, founded the 3HO Foundation in 1969.
As master of kundalini yoga, Yogi Bhajan came to Canada in 1968 and began sharing what he had learned from his spiritual teachers in India. With the motto, “Keep up and you‘ll be kept up”, and the ever-repeated goal to inspire teachers and leaders rather than gather students, Yogi Bhajan travelled tirelessly throughout the world teaching and counselling.
The community of yogis who learnt from Yogi Bhajan spread quickly across North America and Europe, with ashrams popping up in many cities, including London, Amsterdam and Rome. He gave us the inspiration for the first European Yoga Festival in 1978. By offering a complete way of life informed by the science of Kundalini Yoga, he inspired and changed thousands of lives.
Yogi Bhajan was a Sikh, and many of his students became inspired by the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, and chose to live the path of Sikhi. Sikh Dharma International and 3HO were created to help students grow in this lifestyle.
Yogi Bhajan understood that the world was poised at the transition of the age from piscean to aquarian and the knowledge of the ancient wisdom combined with a modern understanding made him a truly contemporary master and leader.
Yogi Bhajan taught that Kundalini Yoga is the “yoga of the householder”. He encouraged his students not to withdraw into spiritual life, but to fully live both the spiritual and worldly lives – encouraging them to get married, have children and work hard. He inspired his students to form a variety of businesses, the most famous being Yogi Tea.
Yogi Bhajan created Miri Piri Academy, a dharmic and yogic international school for children in Amritsar, and the Kundalini Research Institute, the certifying body for teacher-training courses throughout the world.
Yogi Bhajan left his physical body in 2004, leaving a legacy of a growing community on all continents.
I gave you a Healthy, Happy, Holy way of life. I have not come here to collect students; I will create teachers, and teachers so created in this 3HO, shall teach the world a way of life with style. That’s what we have said, that’s what we are doing, that’s what we are. Yogi Bhajan
